I completed my PhD at WIMR under the supervision of Anthony Cunningham In HIV-1 Virology. I then did post-doctoral training on HIV prevention at KUL in Belgium and the Rockefeller University in NYC USA under a CJ martin Fellowship. Presently I am an associate professor at the Kirby Institute of UNSW, where my team bridges the basic science to clinical and epidemiogical programs focused on the prevention and cure of infectious diseases.
My background is as a basic and translational scientist with extensive expertise in molecular virology and basic immunology. Using this foundation, I have utilized many mechanistic aspects of basic science research to focus on translation solutions with regard to gene therapy efforts. With extensive understanding of the target cells and their primary resistance to current gene therapy, my team is currently develop the next generation of gene delivery platforms that can meet the ambitious target of gene therapy in resting immune cells. In recent pandemic times we have used our gene therapy tools to aid the Covid response. This has led to a long term collaboration with many national cohorts and also working closely with CSL. Our work has led to changes in vaccine and therapeutic guidelines both nationally and at the CDC/WHO.
